Wind-energy company TCI Renewables intend to site a moderate-sized wind-farm of seven, 100 m high wind turbines in an unspoiled part of the North Downs in Hampshire at Woodmancott Down. The proposed location is centred on the hamlets of Popham and Woodmancott and surrounded by the villages of Preston Candover, Chilton Candover and Brown Candover, East Stratton, West Stratton, North Waltham, Dummer and Axford.

On October 5th 2011, a planning inspector from the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government ruled against Basingstoke and Dean Borough Council (B&DBC) and upheld an Appeal decision for the erection of a temporary wind monitoring mast in Woodmancott and Popham.

What does this mean?

A developer called TCI Renewables now has the go ahead to collect data to support their plans for a wind farm in Woodmancott and Popham. It is the first step to obtaining full planning permission for the wind farm. Initially this wind farm will have 7 large turbines, 100 metres high. As has already occurred in other parts of the UK, such as Cumbria, Devon and the Scottish Highlands, this could be just the start, with more wind turbines being erected in the Micheldever & Candovers Parishes and throughout Hampshire.

TCI have not hidden their intent:

What will happen next?

TCI will submit a full planning application to B&DBC for the wind farm between May and July 2012. The Council will consider this application, but they need to understand the strength of local opposition. We must ensure B&DBC reject this application.

"STOP Woodmancott Down Wind Farm" Action Group will be fighting this application and we urge you to support our campaign.
